The Dining Room

Written by A.R. Gurney

Directed by Mort Paul

September 19 – October 6, 2019 (12 Performances)

Thursday, June 13, 7-9 p.m. & Saturday, June 15, 2-5 p.m.

at Ladysmith Little Theatre, 4895 Christie Road, Ladysmith

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. Each of the 18 vignettes introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humour and abundant humanity.

The play will be performed by 6 Actors – 3 women and 3 men.

There is no age requirement of any of the actors, all of whom will perform 9 roles of varying ages.

Twice a week, starting on June 20 until July 24 and then three times a week until Opening Night on Thursday, September 19.

All of the actors will not be needed at every rehearsal until August 13, when we will start running each of the acts.

Audition Format:

At the auditions you will be asked to read from several scenes in the play to test your ability to move into different characters. You will likely need to spend 20-30 minutes auditioning.

If you are unable to make either of the auditions, you can contact Mort to arrange a separate time.

Any other queries can be sent to Mort, as well.
